We spend so much time talking about red flags, toxic relationships, and signs your marriage is falling apart.
And yeah, that stuff matters; people need to know when something’s wrong.
But we don’t talk enough about what a good marriage actually looks like.
Not the perfect Instagram version where everyone’s always happy and their house is always clean and they never argue. 🙄
I’m talking about real, everyday good.
The kind that makes you think “yeah, I’m glad I married this person” even on the days when they’re driving you a little crazy. lol
7 Signs You Have an Absolutely Great Marriage
1. You Still Like Each Other

You genuinely enjoy hanging out with him.
He’s not just your husband or your kids’ dad or the guy you split bills with
He’s someone you’d choose to spend time with even if you weren’t married.
You can sit on the couch doing nothing, and it’s comfortable, not awkward.
You don’t need fancy date nights or big plans to enjoy being together.
See, love is the commitment part.
It’s what keeps you there when things are hard.
But liking each other is what makes marriage actually fun instead of just something you’re enduring.
So many married couples love each other out of obligation or history, but don’t actually like each other anymore.
Great marriages have both.
You’re committed AND you actually enjoy this person.
2. You Fight, But You Fight Fair
If someone tells you they never fight with their spouse, they’re either lying or one person has completely given up and just agrees with everything to avoid conflict.
You’re two different people.
Of course, you’re going to disagree sometimes.
The difference in great marriages is how you fight.
You don’t call each other names.
You’re not bringing up that thing from three years ago that has nothing to do with today’s problem.
You’re not saying cruel things just because you know exactly what will hurt most.
Even when you’re mad, you’re still treating each other like human beings you care about.
My husband and I have had some serious arguments.
But even when we’re frustrated with each other, we’re still on the same team.
We’re trying to solve the problem, not destroy each other.
3. You’re Each Other’s Safe Space

This one matters so much.
In a great marriage, when life gets hard, your spouse is the person you want to talk to, not the person you’re avoiding.
You can be completely real with him, showing him the messy parts of yourself you hide from everyone else.
You can tell him when you are scared or have no idea what you’re doing.
And he doesn’t judge you for it or use your vulnerability against you later in an argument.
He just holds space for you and lets you fall apart if you need to.
And you do the same for him.
4. You Celebrate Each Other’s Wins
There are marriages where one person’s success becomes a problem.
The husband feels threatened when his wife does well.
The wife gets jealous when her husband gets recognition. They’re competing instead of celebrating.
That’s terrible.
In great marriages, when something good happens to one of you, you’re both happy.
You’re rooting for each other because you get that you’re on the same team.
When he wins, you both win. When you succeed, that’s good for both of you.
5. Physical Affection Is Still Part of Your Normal Day
A lot of marriages lose this.
Years go by, and they stop touching unless they want something.
They exist in the same house but rarely make physical contact.
In great marriages, you’re still touching each other.
Not just sex; I’m talking about everyday physical connection.
Random hugs when you walk past each other.
Kisses before leaving for work.
Holding hands in the car.
Sitting close on the couch, even though there’s plenty of room.
A hand on your back.
Playing with each other’s hair while you’re talking.
These small physical connections throughout the day keep you feeling like partners instead of roommates.
And of course, sexual intimacy matters too.
Not perfect, not like the movies, but present.
You’re still attracted to each other.
You still make it a priority even when life is busy and you’re both tired.
6. You Trust Each Other Completely
In great marriages, you trust your spouse, not because you’re naive, but because they’ve earned it over and over.
You’re not checking their phone, and they’re not interrogating you about where you’ve been.
You trust them with your heart, and they haven’t given you reasons not to.
This trust covers everything: fidelity, obviously, but also finances, decisions, how they handle conflict, and whether they’ll be there when you need them.
You know they’ve got your back.
You know they’re not going to bail when things get hard.
That security is everything.
7. You Keep Choosing Each Other

Marriage isn’t a choice you make at your wedding.
It’s the choice you make every single day to stay, to try, to love this person even when it’s hard.
And in great marriages, you’re both making that choice because you genuinely want to be here with this person.
Not because you’re stuck or scared or because divorce is too complicated.
Some days that choice is easy.
You’re happy, everything’s good, you’re laughing together, and you can’t imagine being married to anyone else.
Other days, that choice is harder.
You’re frustrated, and you’re both tired and stressed, and maybe not being your best selves.
And you have to consciously choose to stay and work through it instead of checking out emotionally or looking for exits.
Great marriages are built on thousands of these daily choices.
Great marriages aren’t perfect.
They’re real and messy and sometimes hard and also really beautiful.
You have bad days and moments where you’re annoyed with each other.
But underneath all that, there’s friendship and trust and respect holding it together.
You like each other.
You fight without destroying each other, and you keep choosing each other.
That’s a great marriage.
Not Instagram perfect; just solid and real and worth protecting.
If you read this and thought “yeah, that’s us”…
Don’t take it for granted.
Because what you have is actually pretty rare.
