5 Signs You’re Being Too Demanding In Your Marriage

People embark on different journeys with different expectations.

The same can be said about marriage.

It’s a journey, and almost everyone who gets on board does so with some expectations they have of their spouse.

There’s nothing wrong with having expectations, whether they’re high or low.

Where the problem lies is in having unreasonable and unrealistic expectations of your spouse.

Being too demanding can cause a huge strain on an otherwise good marriage.

If nothing is done about it as soon as possible, it can degenerate into ruining the marriage.

We don’t want that, which is why we’ll be talking about signs you’re being too demanding in your marriage.

Instead of seeing it as an attack on your person, see it as a call to do some introspection.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, this article is for you.

Even if you’re not having any marital challenges, I still encourage you to read it and be aware of how being too demanding can potentially ruin your marriage.

Let’s get started.

5 Signs You’re Being Too Demanding In Your Marriage

1. You don’t want your partner to spend time apart from you

Signs you're being too demanding in your marriage

In as much as you love your partner so much and will want to spend every passing second with them, it’s still important to spend time away from each other as separate individuals.

Spending time apart from each other from time to time is healthy for every relationship and marriage.

One of the signs you’re being too demanding in your marriage is that you feel hurt or angry evrytime your spouse wants to spend time away from you.

It’s not right.

Realise that both of you are different individuals who likely have different passions and hobbies.

That’s your unique identity.

Having a unique identity is what makes you a functional person.

You had active, valuable lives before getting married and it’ll be wrong to throw all of that away because one spouse wants to always spend time with the other.

Let your spouse spend time with their friends, loved ones, colleagues, business associates, and others who add value to their lives.

It’s absolutely normal and there’s nothing wrong with it.

The only time you should raise your eyebrows is if they’re always spending time alone or with other people, and never spending time with you.

But if they’re always trying to find a balance between spending time with you and spending time away from you, you have nothing to worry about.

2. You want them to change their personality

Signs you're being too demanding in your marriage

Expecting someone to change who they are for their spouse is a sign of being too demanding in marriage.

It’s understandable if your spouse has some unsavory behaviors that you want them to change.

They may even choose to ditch their bad behaviors and change for good.

It’s in their own interest, and it’ll also benefit you as their spouse.

But expecting someone to change from who they are to a totally different personality?

It’s like asking black to change to white.

I doubt the possibility of it happening.

Someone might have that expectation of their spouse simply because they have a picture of how they want their spouse to look and act etched in their memory.

Now that they’re married, I think that the best time to let go of that fantasy and face reality is now.

No one is perfect.

If your spouse has been been good to you, I don’t see why you’re so focused on changing them from personality X to personality Y.

It’ll likely backfire in the long run, if you don’t desist from trying to change them.

Instead of trying to change them totally, why not focus on appreciating their strengths?

Start noticing and focusing on their good qualities.

See your spouse as a special gift to you, and be thankful for their presence in your life.

Shake off the urge to get them to change who they are whenever it comes.

If you do this consistently, sooner than later, you’ll get rid of the urge to change their personality.

3. You feel that they should always please you

Signs you're being too demanding in your marriage

Are you of the school of thought that your spouse is with you for the sole aim of pleasing you?

While you’re not alone, there’s nothing right about that mentality.

People who have such mentality see nothing wrong with their spouses sacrificing and giving up a lot to put a smile on their faces when they can ordinarily step in and save the day.

For instance, these people will prefer to sit in front of the TV all day while their partners do all the house chores and stress themselves out, despite having a work presentation that they need to prepare for.

It’s a sign of being too demanding in marriage.

Marriage is all about give and take.

In as much as I preach about one party not doing all the giving in marriage as it can drain the person faster than they can imagine, I’m also an advocate of not being only a taker in a marriage.

Learn how to strike a balance between giving and taking for you and your spouse.

Take care of them as much as you want them to take care of you.

Hold nothing back when showing them love.

Match all their positive energies in the marriage.

Don’t focus on being a giver or receiver.

Be a combination of both, and carry your partner along too.

4. You employ nagging as an action tool

Signs you're being too demanding in your marriage

One of the signs you’re being too demanding in your marriage is that you employ nagging as an action tool for your spouse.

Simply put, you see nagging as a way to get your partner to do things.

There are other people who act in such a manner too.

What do I mean?

Whenever such people want to have their way or get their partners to do their biddings, all they have to do is to talk about it nonstop till their partners become worn out.

Then, they’ll have no other choice than to give in to their request.

What such persons are doing is wielding nagging as a means of control over their spouse, which is a very wrong approach.

Nagging is a relationship red flag and should not be entertained.

Instead of resorting to using nagging to achieve results in your marriage, I recommend negotiating with your spouse.

Sit down with them, talk about the problems or challenges you want to address, and let each of you proffer the solutions they think is best.

The idea behind each of you bringing up solutions is that you’ll both do so from the angles that will be beneficial to you as different individuals.

Then, try to combine the solutions or find a compromise that accommodates the needs of both parties involved in the marriage.

What negotiation does is that it lets both of you work together and come up with a solution.

5. You expect everything to be done your own way

Signs you're being too demanding in your marriage

You might be too demanding in your marriage if you always want things to be done your own way.

To you, your way is the best and you won’t have it any other way.

I understand that you pride yourself in being a stubborn person who knows exactly what they want and won’t compromise to get it.

However, in marriage, you must make compromises.

It’s essential for the success of every marriage.

As I mentioned earlier, marriage is all about give and take and, sometimes, meeting each other in the middle.

Everything doesn’t have to and will not go your way in marriage.

Sometimes, your way is not the only right way.

Sometimes, it’s not even the right way.

But if you keep insisting on everything going your way, you’re being too demanding in your marriage.

That mindset has to go, if you want a breath of fresh air in your marriage.

Learn to listen to the opinions of your spouse and be more flexible in your thinking.

Try to meet them halfway, especially in decision-making.

They’ll feel seen, heard, and appreciated in the marriage, and that might be all the face-lift that your marriage needs.
