I believe in submission.
I’ve been married for ten years, I’m a woman of faith, and I’m not throwing Ephesians 5 out of the window because it’s no longer trending.
But I’ve also watched too many women hear “submit” and turn it into “disappear.”
They stop speaking, stop wanting anything for themselves, and then call it godliness.
Sis, that’s not submission. That’s a doormat with a wedding ring.
A doormat is very useful, I’ll give it that.
Everybody steps on it on their way in, nobody asks how it’s doing, and nobody notices it until it’s gone.
From the outside, a submissive wife and a doormat can look exactly the same.
On the inside though, they’re living two very different marriages.
Let’s see.
Submissive Wife or Doormat? 5 Differences That Matter
1. A submissive wife chooses. A doormat has no choice.
You know who that instruction in the Bible is addressed to?
It’s addressed to the wife. Not to the husband.
It’s not “Go and make your wife submit.”
Submission is something a woman gives, not something he takes.
And you can only give what you’re free to hold back.
Imagine two women whose husbands both get a job offer in another city.
The first tells him she’s worried about the children changing schools and leaving her business behind.
He listens, and they pray about it.
He still feels it’s the right move, and she says, “Okay. Let’s go.”
That’s submission.
The second one starts packing the same night, without a word, because she knows that if she asks a single question, the house will be cold for a week.
That’s not submission.
The suitcases look the same, but the hearts packing them are not.
If you go along with everything in your marriage only because you fear his reaction, that’s not submission.
Submission is a gift. If it was taken from you, it was never submission.
2. A submissive wife has a voice. A doormat has gone quiet.
You can’t submit to something you already agree with.
That’s just agreement.
Submission is when you disagree and still let him lead.
Which means a submissive wife has opinions. Strong ones, sometimes.
In ten years of marriage, I’ve had my fair share of “I don’t think this is wise” conversations at home.
Saying it didn’t make me less submissive. It made my submission mean something when I chose to follow anyway.
A doormat doesn’t talk, even if she has a lot to say.
For some reason, she’s learned to nod and swallow just to keep the peace.
A good husband wants to know what you think, even when he goes another way.
He knows your voice protects him, not competes with him, and if your husband only feels respected when you’re silent, the problem isn’t your mouth.
3. A submissive wife is loved. A doormat is used.
People love to quote Ephesians 5:22 and then close the Bible.
Verse 25 tells husbands to love their wives the way Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.
Christ never insulted the church in front of guests. He never raised His hand at her.
Submission was designed for a man laying down his life, not one laying down rules he doesn’t keep himself.
I know the aunties at your traditional wedding pulled you aside and told you a good wife endures everything.
Some things should not be endured.
If he’s hitting you, threatening you, controlling who you can talk to or where you can go, no verse in that Bible is asking you to stay there and absorb it.
Please get somewhere safe and tell someone you trust.
That’s not rebellion. It is wisdom!
You were meant to be a helper, not a footrest.
4. A submissive wife knows the money. A doormat is kept in the dark.
Letting your husband lead does not mean you don’t know where the money is.
The Proverbs 31 woman, the one everybody wants to be on Mother’s Day, considered a field and bought it.
With her own hands, she planted a vineyard.
That woman knew numbers.
A submissive wife can let her husband make the final call on a big financial decision and still know what’s in the accounts, whose name is on the land, and what happens to the family if he dies tomorrow.
A doormat has no idea.
She hands over her salary every month and has to explain why she needs money for transport.
Maybe she has even stopped working because he asked her to, and now she has to justify buying sanitary pads.
Every wife should have a little something of her own, and be able to keep the lights on if life suddenly changes.
5. A submissive wife grows. A doormat shrinks.
I left nursing to write.
Anyone who knows me knows that wasn’t a small decision. And today, my husband believes in what I do more than I sometimes believe in it myself.
That’s what love in a marriage looks like. It makes you more of who God created you to be, not less.
A submissive wife has a life.
She has friends and dreams.
Her marriage is a garden she’s growing in.
A doormat has disappeared from her own life.
She can’t even remember the last time she did something just because she enjoyed it.
She dropped her friends one by one because he didn’t like them.
She shelved her plans because the timing was never right for him.
Ask her what she wants for herself, and she’ll go blank.
That’s not God’s will for women.
God never asked you to submit yourself out of existence.
When a woman goes into marriage full of fire and comes out ten years later as a shadow of herself, someone has taken far more than God ever asked for.
You were given to your husband as a wife, not as a sacrifice.
If you see yourself as a doormat today, I’m not judging you.
Many of us were raised to believe that the quieter we are, the holier we are.
You can unlearn it, one honest conversation at a time.
So, which one are you: the wife or the mat? I hope it’s the wife.
I’m rooting for you! ❤️
