Women Who Expect These 6 Things from Marriage Always End Up Disappointed

Let’s not kid ourselves.

Everyone has expectations about marriage.

If not, why do we get married?

It doesn’t even make any sense to enter a forever relationship with someone without having expectations.

The problem now is not having expectations; it’s which expectations you’re carrying into the marriage.

Because some expectations will help you grow, while others will only set you up for frustration and eventual heartbreak.

And there are certain expectations that will guarantee disappointment every single time.

Here are six of the biggest ones:

Women Who Expect These 6 Things from Marriage Always End Up Disappointed

1. Constant Happiness

There’s a reason we say “happy married life” to newlyweds and not “permanently happy married life.”

Because the truth is, marriage will not give you a forever smile plastered on your face.

Yes, there will be laughter, jokes, inside stories that only you and your husband get, and plenty of “aww” moments.

But there will also be stress, tears, misunderstandings, and days when you wonder if you even like each other.

The problem is when women expect marriage to delete every form of sadness or loneliness they’ve ever felt.

As if marrying a man is the same thing as subscribing to Netflix Comedy 24/7.

It’s not.

Even the best husbands will sometimes wake up moody.

Work pressure will follow him home.

Children will test your patience.

Bills will come knocking like Jehovah’s Witnesses. (Please don’t be angry if you are one. lol)

So, if you expect him to keep you happy every single day, disappointment will keep camping in your living room.

Because if your happiness is 100% tied to your husband’s actions, you’ll start resenting him the moment he doesn’t deliver.

2. A Perfect Man Who Never Changes

Sorry, sis.

That’s not how human beings work.

The man you married at 28 won’t be the same at 38.

Life will happen to him.

He’ll grow, evolve, maybe even lose his hairline.

Expecting perfection will make you resent normal changes.

If you’re waiting for a perfect man who never changes, go and buy a mannequin.

At least that one won’t forget anniversaries, snore at night, or annoy you.

Jokes aside now, instead of expecting your man to remain flawless, expect him to grow.

Sometimes growth looks messy.

But that’s marriage; two imperfect humans constantly adjusting to life’s twists.

Just keep an open mind because people evolve, and you should be ready to adjust.

3. Endless Romantic Gestures

Things Men Secretly Fear About Intimacy in Marriage

Hollywood really scammed us.

They made us think marriage is daily breakfast in bed, roses on the floor, violin music in the background, and men reciting poetry like Shakespeare.

In real life, romance might be your husband buying shawarma on his way back from work, filling your car tank, watching the kids so you can nap, or charging your phone when it’s down.

If you’re stuck on the rose petals and candlelight dinners version of romance, you’ll miss these everyday love languages.

Don’t get me wrong, grand gestures are nice.

But if you expect your husband to wake up every morning with a tray of pancakes and love songs, you’ll be disappointed.

Romance in marriage is mostly practical.

The man who checks your tires before you travel, or gives you the bigger piece of chicken without announcing it, might not be movie romantic, but that’s real love.

If you can’t see that, you’ll forever feel unloved while being loved in ways you didn’t expect.

4. Zero Conflict

Signs your wife sees you as her father, not her husband

Some women honestly believe a good marriage = zero fights.

That once you marry the right person, everything will be smooth like butter.

Please.

Even butter sometimes gets burnt in the frying pan.

Conflict is not the enemy.

It’s proof you’re both human and not robots programmed to agree on everything.

If you expect zero conflict, your first argument will feel like divorce papers are loading.

Healthy couples fight.

They argue, disagree, roll their eyes, slam doors, and sometimes need a little space.

The difference is that they learn to resolve it.

Unhealthy couples pretend everything is fine, but their marriage is filled with resentment.

So, expect healthy conflict, not endless harmony.

Even best friends fight; why won’t two adults sharing the same bed clash once in a while?

5. That Marriage Will “Complete” You

Okay, so here’s a big trap: expecting marriage to fix you.

Some women assume their husbands will fill them up, heal their insecurities, erase their loneliness, and cure their low self-esteem.

Marriage is not therapy.

Your husband can love you, but he cannot complete you.

If you put that kind of pressure on him, you’ll crush both him and the marriage.

I’ve seen women treat their husbands like emotional ATMs…

“Validate me,”

”Heal me”

”Rescue me.”

That’s not love, that’s dependency.

And dependency will always lead to disappointment, because no human being can carry the weight of your entire identity.

Marriage should complement, not complete.

If you’re not already whole, marriage will not magically make you whole. It’ll just expose your cracks even more.

6. They Expect Their Husband to Read Their Mind

This one deserves its own award because it’s probably the most common disappointment in marriage.

I remember my first birthday as a married woman.

I expected my husband to know I wanted to be celebrated.

I wanted gifts.

I wanted him to take me out and just make a big deal of my birthday.

But that didn’t happen, and it ruined my day.

What did I even expect?

Someone who didn’t care about his own birthday. LOL

I learned a great lesson that day: NEVER ASSUME.

Don’t expect him always to read your mind, because these men, bless their hearts, can be pretty clueless.

So indeed, some women genuinely believe their husbands should know.

He should know when she’s upset.

He should know why she’s upset.

He should know what she wants for her birthday, what she meant when she said “I’m fine,” and what she was secretly craving for dinner last night.

Your husband is not Professor X.

He’s not a psychic.

He’s a human being with one brain, two ears, and most times, zero clues about what’s swirling in your mind unless you open your mouth and say it.

See, the problem with this expectation is that it sets him up to fail.

You get mad because he didn’t buy you flowers, but you never told him you love flowers.

You sulk because he didn’t help with the kids, but you never asked for help.

Then you say, “If he really loved me, he would just know.”

Yes, love is considerate, but it doesn’t automatically equal mind-reading.

Even the most attentive men miss hints.

And the more you expect him to “just get it,” the more you’ll feel neglected and unloved when he doesn’t.

It’s not less romantic when you ask; it’s more realistic.

When he delivers, you’ll still feel loved.

So, what then should you expect?

Expect marriage to amplify both the good and challenging parts of your relationship.

Expect to have to communicate about everything: your needs, your feelings, your expectations, your frustrations.

Expect marriage to require ongoing effort, compromise, and intentional choice.

Expect some days to feel magical and some days to feel ordinary, and both to be perfectly normal.

Marriage is two imperfect people learning, failing, loving, and growing together.

Throw away these six unrealistic expectations, and you’ll finally have the space to enjoy the messy, ordinary, extraordinary reality of marriage.

Wishing you a good one!
